The New Craftsmen | Holkham Hall | 2021

A Portrait of Place

AMD were delighted to work with longstanding clients (and now good friends) The New Craftsmen to present ‘A Portrait of Place’ exhibition at Holkham Hall – a grand Palladian Hall built in 1705 at the magnificent Holkham Estate in North Norfolk.

‘A Portrait of Place’ is a biennial project run by The New Craftsmen’s Creative Director Catherine Lock. For this iteration, The New Craftsmen commissioned five of its makers -  Alfred Newall, Arjan Van Dal, James Rigler, Laura Carlin and Mac Collins - to interpret their experience of Holkham Estate through their respective crafts.

From furniture and lighting to pottery and decorative pieces, the makers used their rich surroundings as inspiration to create a product or collection which was shown during London Design Festival in September 2021 at Holkham Estate.

“The idea was to invite a small group of makers to take time away from their studios to immerse themselves creatively and intellectually in worlds that unlock a flurry of ideas and help fuel their imagination. During the residency, we encourage them to explore new - or push existing - techniques and design concepts.”

– Catherine Lock, Creative Director at The New Craftsmen

AMD was invited to create the exhibition route and experience though the house to help tell the story behind each piece made. Working closely with The New Craftsmen and the makers themselves, we created a series of displays using original house materials to compliment and enhance the makers’ work. Light was a very important consideration for the architecture, and indeed it was a key element for us too, as we carefully lit each piece to highlight the objects within the space.

To showcase the thinking behind the craft, we created an installation in the attic which displayed a series of curious objects - from a book on mythical creatures to materials and process - giving visitors a ‘behind the veil’ moment into the minds of the makers.
