Sustainable by Nature: ‘Greenhouse Connections’

We were delighted to work with LSA International for Planted - the UKs first contemporary design event that aims to reconnect people and spaces with nature – at London Design Festival 2021. Following from ‘The Greenhouse by LSA & Friends’ in 2019, AMD were able to exercise our ‘mend and make beautiful’ philosophy, creating a stunning reinvention of the original installation – made entirely from existing materials we created for previous events.

Reduce, reuse, recycle is an adage which challenges today’s cultural narrative of consumption. Pieces which endure in their quality and design can be used time and time again, kept and even handed down. In this installation, LSA encouraged people to connect with nature in a meaningful way, reflecting on the sustainability of their choices by considering the true value of the products they buy.

Reusing a geodesic dome we created in 2019, we incorporated living plants and displayed LSA’s Canopy collection, which was developed in collaboration with the Eden Project. Inspired by the Eden Project’s large Biomes, the structure invited visitors to walk through the green canopy and reflect on our collective responsibility in living together under one canopy. The dome was planted by two horticulturalists affiliated with the Eden Project.

On either side of the dome, on tall metal rods evocative of glassblowing pipes, we displayed a selection of LSA’s longest-standing pieces - which demonstrate a belief in creating timeless objects that endure in form and function. Originally developed by our team in 2017, this bespoke display structure continues to be reused and repurposed, illustrating a sustainable approach to design, materials and craft.

“It was a pleasure to create an installation of this nature with LSA, who also share our values when it comes to minimising waste. Here, we were able to demonstrate that you can create stunning exhibition installations with minimal waste.”

- Andrew Martin, Founder

The Greenhouse Connections installation presented LSA’s ‘Canopy Collection.’ Developed in collaboration with the Eden Project, Canopy is a collection of handmade, recycled glass products centred around the concepts of hydration and propagation - designed to address environmental concerns surrounding water conservation, single use plastics and plant preservation.
